Broken and damaged feathers on Poultry in Breeding season.

Below i have uploaded three images which show the damage to our Blue Orpingtons back and wings, due to the cockerels spurs, and pulling of neck feathers.

This is quite normal but if left unchecked can lead to the skin becoming punctured and torn, thus causing infection to set in. Usually it is best to keep an average of 6 hens to each cockerel, but this i know is not always possible, and so your hens will either need to be rested up from the cockerel, or you can buy one of our protective saddles. Cockerels will always have their favourite hens and some become overworked regardless of how many hens in a pen. When i started out breeding i was not aware of this problem, and lost a couple of hens, so we now always use saddles from start of breeding season, as early as February through to September.

This picture shows the broken feathers on her back and start of rubbing and sores to her wings.

If left unchecked she would end up with puncture holes from the cockerels spurs which then tear down the hens sides, causing pain, infection, and even death.

Our Blue Orpington hen in the resting pen which she will stay in until she has started to re-grow her feathers back. Gives her time to regain her strength and health back. This isnt always possible to have a separate pen, so the poultry saddle is a good option to protect her until the breeding season is over.
